Kenya:Educational Stakeholders Cautioned Against Opening Unnecessary Schools

Education stakeholders in Kisii have advised against opening many unnecessary schools since it was contributing to the dwindling academic standards.
Speaking during the County Education Stakeholders dialogue on improvement of Education quality, the County Education Board Chairman Dr Henry Onderi said that mushrooming of schools in the area was a worrying trend.
Dr Onderi said that many Primary Schools in Kisii also have Secondary Schools established on clan based lines with each clan wanting to own schools which were in most cases not well equipped for learning purposes.
“We need to follow proper guidelines in the establishment of schools so as to ensure that they meet the required standards so that our children can excel academically,” said Dr Onderi.
The Education Board Chairman called on Principals to ensure that they settle all debts before going on transfer so as not to shift the burden to those who take over from them as it has been the case in many schools.
Dr Onderi said that all schools should ensure that their land have title deeds since there were cases of Children of people who donated land to schools turning up later to claim that they were not consulted.
Kisii County Education Director Dr William Sugut called on communities to desist from interfering with running of schools since some were fond of ejecting teachers on flimsy reasons hence adversely affecting performance.
Dr Sugut said that it was a matter of concern that some communities were locking out teachers who do not come from their locality or do not belong to the denomination that sponsored the schools
“Parents should not allow their children to engage in child labor activities like Bodaboda riding or picking of Tea Leaves since they have impacted negatively on their academic studies,” said Dr Sugut.
The County Education Director said that School Board Of Management have been sensitized on proper financial and resource management in order to ensure that they do not find themselves in trouble due to various omissions.
The academic stakeholders were urged to carry out their roles effectively in order to ensure that the region claims its rightful place as one of the best performing academically.
