Mozambique is granting space to Malawi to build a dry port, for the inland on-shipment of goods, at the Port of Nacala.
The project aims to speed up customs clearance of goods and ease the transport of goods, especially fuel and fertilisers.
Nacala is connected to Malawi’s capital Lilongwe and to the city of Blantyre and town of Liwonde via rail.
The government of Malawi will have to decide on the operational model of the facility, whether to embark on a public-private partnership or create a state-owned enterprise.
The Malawian government has already chosen Geneva-based firm Augusto Energy to handle 196m litres of fuel a year from Nacala.
