Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia will carry home Ksh8 million ($56669.3) after winning their 20th title on Sunday, June 25, 2023.
Gor were prepared to go home empty-handed after Football Kenya Federation head Nick Mwendwa announced last month that the federation's coffers 'are empty.'
However, the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Information, Communication and the Digital Economy, Eliud Owalo, on Monday awarded the team Ksh3 million ($21251) following their exemplary performance during the 2022/2023 season.
While hosting the champions at a luncheon in a Nairobi hotel, CS Owalo encouraged Gor Mahia’s leadership to put in place structures to promote the club’s growth.
He also advised the players to train hard to prepare for their CAF Champions League appearance as the country's representatives.
“I have hosted the victorious Gor Mahia FC for Lunch, a day after they lifted the coveted FKF Premier League trophy. I congratulated the team for winning the league and gave them a cash reward of Ksh.3 Million ($21251),” said CS Eliud Owalo.
Owalo also promised the club a new cutting-edge bus at the start of the upcoming season.
SportPesa, the club's shirt sponsor, has also offered Gor a Ksh3.5 million ($24793) bonus for winning the league, while Opposition Leader Raila Odinga gave the players a Ksh1.5 million ($10625.4) donation immediately after the game.
Gor won the title by one point over Tusker after coming from behind to defeat Nairobi City Stars 4-1 at Kasarani Stadium on the outskirts of Nairobi.
