SADC meets to discuss budget for Mozambique troop deployment.

June 28, 2021

SADC Executive Secretary Stergomena Lawrence Tax says SADC is ready to deploy troops.

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Council of Ministers will hold on Tuesday an extraordinary virtual meeting to consider the budget for the deployment of the region's Standby Force to support Mozambique in the fight against terroism.

The meeting is being organised by the SADC Secretariat, under a guideline issued at the third extraordinary summit this year in Maputo, the Mozambican capital.

On that occasion, among others, the summit directed the Council of Ministers to urgently meet to consider the budget for the deployment of the SADC much-needed force mission to support Mozambique.

Further details were not provided to the pess. However, the head of the SADC Standby Force recommended a 3,000-strong military deployment following a visit in April.

The tuesday's meeting of the Council of Ministers will be preceded by a Session of the Finance Committee (senior officials) scheduled for Tuesday morning.

SADC is composed of 16 member states, namely, Angola, DRC, Eswatine, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Lesotho, South Africa, Comoros, Mauritius, Madagascar, Seychelles, Tanzania, Malawi, Botswana, which hosts the headquarters, and Mozambique, which assumes at this moment the rotating presidency.

The Islamic extremists' violent campaign in Mozambique's northern province of Cabo Delgado has caused a rapidly escalating humanitarian crisis. The jihadi violence is blamed for the deaths of more than 2,000 people and has caused more than 700,000 to flee their homes.
