Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua officially unveiled his new political party, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), during a high-profile event in Lavington, Nairobi.

The launch marks a significant shift in Kenya's political landscape as Gachagua positions DCP as a national movement with strong roots in the Mt. Kenya region.

"This party is born out of the people's desire for genuine representation. We are building a home for all Kenyans who feel unheard and sidelined,” said Gachagua.

The DCP's leadership includes notable figures such as Cleophas Malala, appointed as interim deputy party leader, and Cate Waruguru, one of the national vice chairpersons.

However, the launch was marred by disruptions, including chaos caused by a group of youths, which temporarily halted the proceedings.

Gachagua said that the DCP aims to resonate with citizens disillusioned by the current political establishment.

"Our movement is about listening to the people," he said.

He also highlighted the party's focus on youth involvement, noting plans to appoint a Gen Z leader as his deputy.

The DCP's launch signals a potential realignment in Kenyan politics, especially as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
