Kenya's Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, on November 26, 2024, held talks with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal in Dakar as part of his campaign for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.
The meeting focused on garnering Senegal’s support ahead of the February 2025 elections for the top continental post.
Odinga's trip to Senegal is part of a larger West African tour that began on November 21 to strengthen regional support for his campaign.
During the meeting, the two presidents stressed the importance of effective leadership at the AUC in addressing Africa's issues, which include economic integration, climate change, and peacebuilding.
“Thank you President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal for the warm welcome in Dakar. It was an honour discussing with you my candidature for the Chairmanship of the African Union Commission and the vision I have for our continent. I was delighted to hear your ideas on how to build a united, peaceful and prosperous Africa,” said Raila Odinga.
The Kenyan leader has also visited Benin, Togo, Ghana, and the Gambia, where he engaged with respective heads of state. In these meetings, Odinga highlighted his vision for a united and prosperous Africa underpinned by dynamic and inclusive policies.
Odinga, a seasoned statesman with significant experience in government and diplomacy, has positioned himself as a uniting contender for the chairmanship position, which is expected to be highly competitive.
