Human rights defenders across Africa are set to gain significant support with the establishment of the Pan African Solidarity Network, which will bolster their efforts.
Launched by Africans Rising for Peace, Unity, Justice, and Dignity in Accra, Ghana, the network's creation was first proposed during the Africans Rising All-African Movement Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania, in August 2022.
This initiative emerged in response to the numerous challenges activists face, which could be addressed more effectively through a united platform.
During the 2024 All-African Movement Assembly, several activists and human rights defenders shared the threats they encounter daily, including political assassination, sexual violence, economic suppression, social isolation, and mental health issues.
For instance, Kenya's Human Rights Activist Boniface Mwangi narrated how he almost took away of his life in Early August as a result of mental torture caused by intimidations he consistently receives from local authorities.
"I almost killed myself early this month as a result of mental illness. We need to create a community of love of people who are fighting for you. Defend them and do not attack them as they are dealing with your oppressors,"said Boniface Mwangi.
Hardi Yakubu, the movement's coordinator, emphasized that the network will provide a framework for mobilizing support across the continent. This mobilization will occur through various channels, including online messaging, SMS, and in-person meetings.
"The network aims to unite committed, action-oriented individuals and movements," said Yakubu.
According to Yakubu, the network will be guided by Ubuntu principles and will focus on assembling the necessary infrastructure, resources, and support.
