Former First Lady of the Republic of Kenya, Margaret Kenyatta, on August 15, 2024, delivered a poignant and inspiring narrative of her journey as a transformative leader at the prestigious Global First Ladies Academy Programme held in New York.
The VIP dinner event, organized by the Global First Ladies Alliance in collaboration with Columbia Mailman School of Public Health, provided a platform for current and former First Ladies to forge stronger connections and collaborate with key stakeholders dedicated to advancing health and development in their respective countries.
Mrs. Kenyatta, whose tenure as First Lady was marked by a deep commitment to maternal and child health, shared how her profound concern over the high rates of maternal and child deaths in Kenya catalyzed her advocacy efforts.
This passion culminated in creating the Beyond Zero Initiative, a groundbreaking campaign that has become a symbol of hope for millions.
Through Beyond Zero, Mrs. Kenyatta demonstrated how a single, well-executed idea could create widespread and lasting impact.
In her address, Mrs. Kenyatta recounted her involvement in various initiatives to raise awareness and mobilize maternal and child health resources.
Notably, she participated in marathons, using these high-profile events as a platform to elevate the visibility of maternal health issues. Among these was the renowned London Marathon, where she ran all 42 kilometres to bring international attention to the cause.
"I committed to run the famous London Marathon—all 42 kilometers of it! I hoped to elevate the visibility of this important issue in the international arena and raise funds to support my cause," Mrs. Kenyatta said.
The former First Lady emphasized the critical role of collaboration and partnership in achieving sustainable change.
She acknowledged the diverse partners and collective efforts instrumental in propelling the Beyond Zero movement.
"Leveraging my multiple roles as First Lady was made possible because of the ripple effect of the solid partnerships and friends we made along the way. It demonstrated how collective efforts towards a shared destiny can bring transformative change," she stated.
Mrs. Kenyatta's journey with Beyond Zero is a powerful testament to the impact of purpose-driven leadership and committed advocacy.
