The National Police Service (NPS) has strongly condemned the killing of Charles  Ong’ondo Were, Member of Parliament for Kasipul, describing the incident as “tragic and senseless.”

MP Were was fatally shot on the evening of April 30, 2025, in what police say was a targeted and premeditated attack. According to a press statement by NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, the incident occurred at around 7:30 p.m. near the City Mortuary roundabout along Ngong Road, Nairobi.

“National Police Service (NPS) regrets to confirm the tragic and senseless shooting of Kasipul Member of the National Assembly, the late Hon. Charles Were,” the statement read.

Police reports indicate that a white Toyota Crown carrying the MP stopped at a red traffic light when a motorcycle with two riders pulled up beside it. Eyewitnesses told officers that the pillion passenger dismounted, approached the car, and opened fire on the passenger side where Were was seated. The gunman then fled the scene on the same motorcycle.

The vehicle’s driver and another male passenger, both unharmed, rushed Were to Nairobi Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

“The nature of this crime appears to be both targeted and premeditated,” said Nyaga, adding that detectives and senior police commanders were already investigating the incident.

He also extended condolences to the late MP’s family and colleagues: “The Service extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, parliamentary colleagues, constituents, and close associates.”

The public has been urged to assist with any information that could aid investigations. Witnesses are encouraged to contact the nearest police station or use toll-free numbers 999, 112, or 0800 722 203 (#FichuakwaDCI).
