A three day Women in Science, Technology and Innovation (WISTI) 2025 conference was officially opened today in Harare by Dr Frederick Shava, Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology. The conference is running from 19 to 21 March, 2025 under the theme :Accelerate Action:Women Driving Science Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development and is being hosted by Elevate Trust and other partners, including the Ministry.
According to the organizers, WISTI is Zimbabwe's leading platform focused on empowering women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
They said that the conference is in its second edition and is expected to bring over 500 delegates, who include women leaders, policymakers, industry professionals, academics, students and innovators to inspire action and drive equality in science, technology and innovation.
The conference aims to foster collaboration among women, companies and institutions in STEM, promote women-led innovation in emerging fields such as AI, robotics and biotechnology, provide mentorship to young women and girls in STEM and to celebrate excellence by recognizing outstanding women in STEM leadership and innovation.
The organizers added that key highlights of the high level engagement will focus on leadership, commercialization and collaboration guidance skills coaching.
Other initiatives will include mentorship, sector specific breakout sessions and exhibitions, academic paper recognition and awards.
The exhibitions and innovation showcases are focusing on women - led innovations, research and emerging technology displays from individuals and institutions.
The organizers said proceeds from the conference will support STEM outreach to rural communities, expanding access and opportunities for girls in marginalized areas of the country.
The conference aims to strengthen partnerships and collaboration in STEM, increased visibility for women-led innovations, practical strategies to empower women to lead in science, technology and innovation and to enhance mentorship networks for young women and girls.
