Malawi: I Am Fully Fit And Ready To Turn Malawi – Mutharika

April 22, 2024

By Joseph Dumbula.

Prof Mutharika believes he can rescue Malawi from its race to the bottom under President Chakwera

Peter Mutharika, Malawi’s former President who is 83 years old insists he has the as enough energy to lead the nation as he continues highlighting intentions for the ballot next year.

Mutharika was responding to heightened concerns in the public domain and subtly within his Democratic Progressive Party that he is rather ‘too old to rule’ the Southern African nation.

He said: “I feel very strong recently and I had a stress test from a cardiologist and I was told that I have a heart of a 19-year-old. I can assure you that the day I feel that I cannot discharge my duties either as a candidate or president because of my health I will know and I will quit. I have no intentions of embarrassing myself or my family no way not for any job on earth,” he said in an interview with a local station Times Television.

Mutharika has been a fierce critic to President Lazarus Chakwera’s regime after losing in the historical 2020 fresh presidential elections.

For instance, as Pan African Visions and other publications have reported before Mutharika feels that the current leadership has failed to direct the nation towards socio-economic stability.

However, the government has responded by stating that the mess the nation is in follows ‘bad’ decisions that Mutharika’s leadership made including incurring huge debts.

In the interview, he also defended his recent food donation to hunger stricken houses and the Muslim community. He said he was only undertaking humanitarian work and that he will start the campaign as normal as time tells.

Malawi is seventeen months away from the elections in which sights will be on Mutharika who will most likely face off with Chakwera with of course other reports suggesting Vice President Saulos Chilima will also be in the mix.
