Dr. Mamadou Tangara, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, has solicited support from a US lawmaker Karen Bass to help in pursuing justice in the killing of Gambian-US citizen Momodou Lamin Sisay.
In a press release from the ministry on Thursday , the Minister engaged the congresswoman in her capacity as the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and also the Africa Subcommittee of the House Foreign Affairs Committee in the United States Congress.
The request was made during a telephone call with the Congresswoman on Thursday.
“He asked for truth and justice to prevail in the case of Gambian citizen, Lamin Sisay, 39, who died in Georgia, Atlanta, US,” the statement indicated.
Minister Tangara also expressed concern about the safety of Gambians and African Americans in the US.
“In solidarity, he expressed that “Neither of us is safe until all of us are safe.”
“He also extended an invitation for Congresswoman Bass and members of Congressional Black Caucus to visit The Gambia, land of Kunta Kinteh.”
“The discussion mainly centred on how to ensure justice for Mr. Lamin Sisay and also to preserve the memory of George Floyd,” the ministry says.
Minister Tangara used the opportunity to thank Congresswoman Bass for efforts employed in attaining a just and equal society in the US and across the world.
Congresswoman Karen is leading the U.S congress’s effort to respond to police brutality against black Americans.
On Monday 8th June, she led the tabling of a bill introduced by Democrats with a view to bring an end to police misconduct with reform.
