In response to the ongoing parliamentary impasse within the House of Representatives of the Republic of Liberia, a mediation and diplomacy mission was launched by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). His Excellency Ahmed Bola TINUBU, the current Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority and President of Nigeria, initiated this mission to facilitate dialogue among key political stakeholders.
From November 11 to 16, a parliamentary delegation led by Right Honourable Speaker Hadja Memounatou IBRAHIMA engaged with various authorities in Monrovia. The delegation, which included notable representatives such as Honourable Billay G. TUNKARA and Honourable Nassirou BAKO-ARIFARI, aimed to address the issues that have paralyzed the legislative functions of the government and raised concerns among the Liberian populace.
Despite extensive discussions with prominent figures, including President Joseph N. BOAKAI and Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene Gyapay YUOH, the delegation noted a lack of consensus among the parties involved. They encouraged all stakeholders to seek resolution within the legal frameworks established by the 1986 Constitution of Liberia and the House of Representatives' rules of procedure.
The delegation reiterated the importance of upholding the rule of law and urged members of the House to prioritize the interests of the Liberian people. In a call for unity, they reminded all parties of their responsibilities as representatives of the nation, emphasizing the need to foster peace, development, and progress.
However, the delegation expressed deep concerns regarding the current political stalemate that has impeded governance and legislative progress.
The mission highlighted Liberia's historical significance as one of Africa's oldest parliamentary democracies, emphasizing its resilience and commitment to democratic principles, especially following the successful transfer of executive power after the November 2023 elections.
As the ECOWAS mission continues to advocate for dialogue and resolution, the delegation remains hopeful that an amicable settlement can be reached, serving the best interests of both the Liberian people and the broader West African community. The mission concludes with a message of solidarity, urging Liberians to remain patient and calm as efforts to resolve the political impasse unfold.
