Zambia: Concerned Parents in Marsha East Call for Safe Water Solutions

August 19, 2024

By Alice Chisanga

Marsha East, Zambia - Parents in Marsha East Located in Kanchibiya Dictrict of Northern Zambia are sounding the alarm over the safety of their children at Marsha Primary School after it was discovered that kids as young as six years old are drinking water from the contaminated Kanyerere River.

The worried parents claim that the river water is not safe for consumption due to the presence of dirty deposits, posing serious health risks to their children.

Their concerns are further exacerbated by the onset of the rainy season, which causes the river to burst its banks, increasing the likelihood of waterborne diseases.

In light of this, the parents are urgently calling on the government to intervene by sinking boreholes in the area to provide a safe and reliable source of water.

This, they believe, would go a long way in promoting the health and safety of their children.

"We can't afford to wait any longer," said  one concerned parent. "Our children's lives are at risk, and it's the government's responsibility to ensure they have access to clean water."

The community is eagerly awaiting a response from the authorities, hoping that their pleas will be heard and addressed promptly.

Meanwhile Muchinga Province Permanent Secretary Henry Mukungule could not issue any statement on the matter and referred all queries to Kanchibiya District Commission who couldn't be reached at press time.
