Serenje District, Central Province - Chief Mailo of the Lala people of Central Zambia has strongly condemned parents who fail to send their children to school, despite free education.
Speaking during a tour of his chiefdom, Chief Mailo expressed disappointment that some parents prioritize fishing over education, questioning their mindset.
The Chief praised the Ministry of Education's efforts to support girls' education through initiatives like Keep Girls in School (KGS), but noted that these opportunities are not being fully utilized.
He expressed concern that some girls are being withdrawn from school for unnecessary activities.
Chief Mailo also commended the Centre for Environment Justice (CEJ) for providing alternative livelihoods to families in his chiefdom through village banks.
He urged parents to take advantage of the increased number of teachers and improved learning environments, resulting from government expansions of classroom blocks.
The Traditional Leader emphasized the importance of education, calling on parents to prioritize their children's future.
