Malawi’s former President Peter Mutharika has publicly insisted his age, at 83 will not deter him to contest in next year’s polls, after which he says he will develop the Southern African nation.
At a rally politically rally after he lost in the 2020 fresh polls, Mutharika led his mammoth fans in Blantyre where he drew daggers at the current regime accusing it of lacking a sense of direction.
He says until now, the Lazarus Chakwera led government has given Malawians a raw deal and that he would fix the economy within the first two years.
‘’Today, I want to reveal that I have been undertaking continued consultations and advice, I will contest at the DPP convention and I will be on the presidential ballot in 2025 and I will win again. I want to tell Malawians that they should not feel discouraged because God has not abandoned us. We think that if we can come back to the government, we can resolve the problems Malawians are facing in two years,’’ said the Law Professor.
He mentioned increased cost of living, slow and weak interventions to food insecurity during lean season, what he called “economic mismanagement and selective justice in fighting corruption as some of the failures of the Tonse Alliance administration led by Chakwera.
Meanwhile, Information Minister Moses Kunkuyu has branded the remarks by Mutharika as coming from a ‘bitter man’.
