In a significant development, Pope Francis has officially approved the retirement request of Bishop Methodius Kilaini, culminating a remarkable 51-year journey in the priesthood, including 24 years as a bishop.

The announcement was made by Bishop Gervas Nyaisonga during the consecration and installation Mass of Bishop-elect Jovitus Mwijage.

The Holy Mass ceremony, held at the Kaitaba Stadium on Saturday, January 27, 2024, celebrated the appointment of the new Bishop, Jovitus Francis Mwijage, who was consecrated and officially installed as the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Bukoba.

Beginning his reflection on the Gospel, Cardinal Protase Rugambwa greeted and expressed gratitude to the gathered audience saying:  "Reverend Bishops, Archbishops, dignitaries, leaders of government and various institutions, dear ones, priests, both male and female religious, beloved seminarians, and faithful, all of you present here with goodwill in Christ... especially, I would like to greet, congratulate, and express my gratitude to His Excellency Bishop Desiderius Rwoma, the retired Bishop of Bukoba, and Methodius Kilaini, the Apostolic Administrator of this diocese who, in a few hours, will hand over leadership to the newly consecrated bishop officially installed in today's celebration. Additionally, I would like to remember, honor, and continue to pray for the bishops who have preceded us and now rest in Christ. May God grant them a good rest and relieve the hardships He placed upon His faithful servants."

The event began with Evening Prayers on January 26, 2024, led by Bishop Flavian M. Kassala, the Vice President of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference and the Bishop of the Geita Diocese.

Attended by bishops, priests, deacons, and the faithful from various dioceses in Tanzania and neighboring countries, the mass was also graced by representatives from international and national bodies, political leaders, government representatives, and leaders from various religious denominations.

Cardinal Protase Rugambwa, in his homily, expressed gratitude and congratulations to the retiring Bishop Desiderius Rwoma and Apostolic Administrator Methodius Kilaini.

He emphasized the importance of prayer and love in carrying out the mission of the Church, encouraging everyone to be people of prayer and love, guided by the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

After the Mass and blessings, representatives from international and national organizations gave speeches.

Vatican Ambassador, Archbishop Angelo Accattino, congratulated the new Bishop and highlighted the historical significance of the event, especially to Cardinal Laurean Rugambwa, the first native Bishop of Bukoba. He emphasized the positive collaboration between the government and the Church.

Bishop Flavian M. Kasala, on behalf of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference, thanked God for the appointment of Bishop Jovitus Mwijage.

He acknowledged the bishop's previous role in leading the Pontifical Mission Societies and expressed confidence that his international experience would benefit the local Church. Bishop Kasala called on the faithful to support the new bishop in his ministry.

Throughout Bishop Methodius Kilaini's tenure, his commitment to the Catholic faith played a pivotal role in fostering peace and harmony in Tanzania, a developing country grappling with numerous challenges.

His outspoken nature extended beyond advocacy for effective leadership to encompass the role of the Catholic Church in promoting social services and community well-being.

Bishop Kilaini, recognizing the significance of the Catholic faith as a unifying force, actively encouraged cooperation and solidarity among residents.

He understood that faith can be a powerful tool for societal transformation and economic development.

In his Easter messages, he consistently emphasized the importance of hard work as a means of self-advancement and called for unity in implementing development plans.

The Catholic Diocese of Bukoba, under Bishop Kilaini's guidance, became a beacon of hope for the community.

His leadership not only addressed spiritual needs but also focused on the practical aspects of improving the quality of life.

The emphasis on child rights and protection against violence underscored the Church's commitment to nurturing the future generation with strong moral values.

In a developing country like Tanzania, where access to social services can be challenging, Bishop Kilaini's efforts in championing the cause of social justice and welfare were particularly significant.

His advocacy aligned with the Catholic Church's mission to serve the marginalized and uplift communities, contributing to the establishment of social services that reached ordinary people.

As Bishop Kilaini officially retires, his legacy extends beyond the walls of the church, leaving an indelible mark on the pursuit of peace, social harmony, and the provision of essential services in Tanzania.

His unwavering dedication to the Catholic faith has not only strengthened the spiritual fabric of the community but has also played a vital role in addressing the practical challenges faced by a developing nation.
