Gor Mahia are the 2022/2023 Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League Champions.
The record-breaking Gor Mahia on Sunday came from one goal down to beat City Stars 4-1 in their last match of the season at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, outskirts of Nairobi.
Samuel Kapan put the host ahead in the 47th minute after the goalless first half marred with missed opportunities from both sides.
Gor Mahia striker Benson Omollo responded three minutes later, scoring his 26th goal of the season.
Ugandan import Peter Lwasa's thunderous shot in the 22nd minute gave the Kogalo a lead before Austine Onyango made it three for the champions following a well-taken free kick at the edge of the opponent's box.
With one minute remaining until the end of the regular time, Alpha Onyango sent the ball behind the goalkeeper, sending fans into wild celebrations.
Gor’s closest opponent Tusker FC finished second with 69 points, one behind the champions despite beating the bottom-placed Vihiga Bullets 4-0.
Johnathan McKinstry’s charges will represent Kenya in the CAF Champions League next season.
Meanwhile, the country’s opposition leader Raila Odinga lauded Gor for winning their 20th title in the history of Kenyan football.
“Congratulations to Gor Mahia on their 20th League title, a wonderful achievement! Bravo! It's high time we all rally behind community football clubs and give them the support they deserve,” said Raild Odinga.
Former Senator Gideon Moi said, “Congratulations to Gor Mahia for winning the FKF Premier League title after a thrilling match today at Kasarani Stadium against City Stars that kept fans on the edge of their seats. We also salute City Stars for mounting a spirited fight in the field.”
“Bravo, Gor Mahia! A standing ovation for clinching a League record 20th title. Outstanding achievement, well deserved,” said added Governor Gladys Wanga.
