Malawi: President Chakwera cancels public engagements

By Joseph Dumbula. President Lazarus Chakwera has stopped all his local and foreign travel over what state house says is his bid to concentrate on emerging regional and national issues. This has however come at a time when he is facing tight criticism over his recent travels including a foreign trip to Kenya, Dubai and Scotland for the Cop26 summit. But as vague as it were a statement signed by Secretary to president and cabinet, Zangazanga Chikhosi said the president would make a further statement and that other events would be delegated to other top officials. The announcement came after he graced an event marking 100 years of operations for the Malawi Police Service in the capital Lilongwe. He was due to attend events marking the commemorations of World Aids Day in the northern region city of Mzuzu. Recently, experts have been calling on Chakwera to tame travels as a measure to save resources, although government insisted all presidential engagements are of equal relevance.
