The government is set to launch ambitious projects next year, unveiling towering economic landmarks in Kinshasa and Nairobi, with skyscrapers soaring 25 and 22 floors respectively.

Images of the proposed buildings in Nairobi and Kinshasa are already available, alongside plans for other economic buildings in the cities of Maputo (Mozambique), Bujumbura (Burundi), Kigali (Rwanda), and Lilongwe (Malawi).

This announcement was made on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, January Makamba, while presenting the ministry's budget estimates for the 2024/2025 financial year to Parliament.

The ministry has requested Parliament to approve TSh 241.069 billion, of which TSh 229.4 billion is for recurrent expenditure and TSh 11.6 billion for development projects. This request is 3% lower than the previous budget due to a 34% reduction in development funds.

According to Makamba, the government owns 109 houses and plots worldwide, incurring a rental cost of TSh 29 billion per month. Once completed, the new investments are expected to generate TSh 36 billion per month and TSh 692 billion annually.

"The ministry has entered into a partnership agreement with the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) for the construction of an economic building at the Tanzanian Embassy in Nairobi," said Makamba. The project involves developing a plot in the Upper Hill area of Nairobi with twin towers of 22 floors.

Makamba stated that the ministry has completed the legal procedures for the handover of documents and the official transfer of construction responsibilities to NSSF.

"The ministry, in collaboration with NSSF, has also finalized the legal preparations for the construction project of an economic building in Kinshasa, DRC," he added. The project will be executed on the embassy plot located on Boulevard de 30 Juin in Kinshasa, involving the construction of a 25-floor building.

He further mentioned that the ministry is continuing with the preparations for implementing other government-building projects and economic ventures on government-owned plots.
