Ethiopia is set to make aviation history with the construction of Africa’s largest airport, a transformative project that promises to redefine air travel across the continent.

Following a groundbreaking $7.8 billion funding agreement between Ethiopian Airlines Group and the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), the ambitious Bishoftu International Airport is now set for takeoff.

This marks a significant step in Ethiopia’s rapid ascent as a global aviation powerhouse, aligning seamlessly with the AfDB’s commitment to integrating Africa through world-class infrastructure.
Located in Abusera, near Bishoftu, just 45 kilometers from the capital Addis Ababa, the new airport is poised to alleviate congestion at the overstretched Bole International Airport.

Designed to handle over 60 million passengers by 2040—up from the current 17 million—the project will not only enhance Ethiopia’s standing as a premier aviation hub but also stimulate economic growth, job creation, and global connectivity

More than just an airport, this initiative represents a bold reimagination of Africa’s transport and logistics ecosystem. It will revolutionize cargo transport, flight catering, and aircraft maintenance while strengthening Ethiopia’s role in international trade.

At the official signing ceremony in Abidjan, Ethiopian Airlines CEO Mesfin Tasew and AfDB Vice President for Regional Development, Integration, and Strategy, Nnenna Nwabufo, formalized the agreement in the presence of AfDB President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina and Ethiopian Finance Minister Ahmed Shide.

Adesina praised Ethiopia’s impressive economic trajectory, noting its 8.1% GDP growth and Addis Ababa’s rapid modernization under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. He described the Bishoftu International Airport as a flagship infrastructure project that would cement Ethiopia’s leadership in the aviation sector.

Ahmed Shide echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the airport’s construction is a reflection of Ethiopia’s broader economic transformation. The sheer scale and ambition of the project are a testament to visionary leadership, strategic investment, and the seamless integration of cutting-edge technology in aviation management.
