Malawi: Mutharika Takes A Swipe at President Lazarus Chakwer Over Failed Promises

This is our moment to rise above adversity, reclaim our destiny, and chart a brighter future for Malawi, says Prof Mutharika.

Former President and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, has castigated Lazarus Chakwera's government, labelling it a "failed government" that has driven Malawi into economic hardship and social unrest.

In his end-of-year address, Mutharika pointed out the urgent issues confronting Malawians, including rising inflation, the collapse of farming support, youth unemployment, and a severe hunger crisis.

Mutharika noted the intolerable living conditions under Chakwera's rule, mentioning the soaring prices of basic necessities like food and soap, as well as the lack of fertilizer and seeds due to the shortcomings of the Affordable Input Program (AIP).

He expressed concern over the critical shortage of foreign exchange, which has hampered businesses, and the persistent fuel shortages that have stifled the economy. The escalating food crisis, he remarked, has led many Malawians to rely on buffalo beans and boiled mangoes, highlighting the country's alarming decline.

The former president also pointed out the increasing frustration among Malawi’s youth, who are grappling with unemployment and limited prospects for a brighter future.
"Our young people, brimming with talent and potential, are left feeling hopeless," Mutharika said.

He reaffirmed the DPP’s dedication to tackling these challenges, vowing to make food affordable, support farmers, and create job opportunities for the youth.

In addition to the economic difficulties, Mutharika voiced serious concerns about the decline of democracy under Chakwera’s leadership. He criticized what he termed “selective justice” and the intimidation of opposition leaders, journalists, and religious figures, describing it as a direct assault on Malawi’s hard-earned democratic rights.

He pledged that his outfit would tirelessly strive to restore the rule of law and safeguard freedom of expression.
Looking ahead to 2024, Mutharika reflected on the sadness caused by the untimely passing of Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and others. He called for unity and resilience in honouring their legacy, encouraging

Malawians to hold onto hope and faith as they progress. He also requested prayers for timely rains to ensure the nation's food security.

In his hopeful message, Mutharika presented a vision for a better Malawi—where food is affordable, businesses flourish, every child has access to education, and leaders are accountable to the populace. He reassured Malawians that the DPP is dedicated to realizing this vision and urged citizens to come together to rebuild the country.

“As we step into the New Year, let us do so with purpose, faith, and an unshakable belief in our collective strength. This is our moment to rise above adversity, reclaim our destiny, and chart a brighter future for Malawi,” said Mutharika.
