At least seven people died and 14 injured after a lorry smashed into traders at Kaburengu Trading Centre along busy Eldoret-Webuye highway in Western Kenya.
The grisly road accident occurred on Monday, August 24 in the afternoon according to Kakamega County Police Commander James Ng’etich.
Ng’etich said the lorry lost control and veered off the ramming into traders selling goods by the roadside and ended up hitting a matatu (a public vehicle service) on the highway.
The vehicle which was ferrying gravel was heading towards Webuye.
The majority of the casualties were women selling fruits and vegetables.
A motorcycle rider also perished in the accident as the lorry hit him before crashing into the matatu.
Those injured were rushed to the medical facilities in the area for treatment whereas the remains of the deceased were transferred to Webuye Sub-County Hospital Mortuary.
Reports indicate that the section of the road has been marked as a black spot with several accidents witnessed at Kaburengu.
