President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged the newly elected leadership of the Nigerian Chapter of the International Press Institute (IPI) to uphold the principles of responsible journalism while promoting the nation’s interests as outlined in the Nigerian Constitution.

This appeal was made in a congratulatory message to the newly elected executives of IPI Nigeria, who have been tasked with safeguarding press freedom and ensuring the integrity of journalism in the country.

The president’s call comes at a crucial time for journalism in Nigeria, as the media continues to grapple with challenges such as misinformation, ethical dilemmas, and the pressure to balance public service with commercial interests. Tinubu’s message underscores the critical role of the media in shaping national discourse and fostering unity.

The Nigerian chapter of the IPI recently held elections that saw the re-election of Mr. Musikilu Mojeed, the Editor-in-Chief of Premium Times, as President. Mr. Mojeed, a veteran journalist with a reputation for investigative reporting, will be supported by a dynamic team comprising Ahmed Shekarau of Media Trust (Daily Trust) as Secretary and Fidelis Mbah of Al Jazeera TV as Deputy President.

Other elected members include:

Rafatu Salami of Voice of Nigeria as Treasurer.

Yomi Adeboye of Herald Newspaper as Assistant Secretary.

Tobi Soniyi of ARISE TV as Legal Adviser.

This team of seasoned professionals is expected to bring their wealth of experience to bear in steering IPI Nigeria towards achieving its goals of promoting press freedom and high standards of journalism.

Founded in 1950, the International Press Institute (IPI) is a global network of editors, media executives, and leading journalists committed to defending press freedom and the free flow of information. With members in nearly 100 countries, the IPI serves as a vital platform for addressing issues affecting the media industry, including censorship, attacks on journalists, and the erosion of public trust in news outlets.

The institute’s mission is to ensure that journalism can operate independently and without fear of retaliation. Through its advocacy, the IPI promotes quality, ethical reporting and the development of media systems that enable journalists to fulfill their public service roles effectively.

In his congratulatory message, President Tinubu highlighted the importance of journalism in fostering national development and unity. He emphasized that the media must act as a watchdog, holding those in power accountable while also contributing to the nation’s progress by disseminating accurate and unbiased information.

“The media’s role is indispensable in our democracy,” Tinubu stated. “Responsible journalism that upholds the principles of truth, fairness, and objectivity is key to building a stronger Nigeria. I urge the new leadership of IPI Nigeria to lead by example, ensuring that the media remains a tool for national cohesion and development.”

Despite the lofty ideals of press freedom, Nigerian journalists face numerous challenges, including threats to their safety, limited access to information, and interference from political and corporate interests. These challenges often undermine the ability of the media to operate independently and effectively.

The rise of fake news and the spread of misinformation have further complicated the media landscape. In response, media organizations have been urged to adopt innovative strategies to verify information and rebuild public trust.

Under the leadership of Mr. Mojeed, IPI Nigeria is expected to address these challenges head-on. The organization has outlined several priorities, including:

Advocacy for Press Freedom: Ensuring that journalists can work without fear of harassment or intimidation.

Capacity Building: Providing training and resources to journalists to enhance their skills and promote ethical reporting.

Combating Fake News: Collaborating with stakeholders to tackle misinformation and promote media literacy among the public.

Strengthening Media Independence: Advocating for policies and practices that protect the autonomy of news organizations.
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Mojeed reaffirmed his commitment to these goals, stating, “The Nigerian media is at a crossroads, and it is our duty as members of IPI Nigeria to navigate these challenges with courage and integrity.

We must work together to uphold the values of press freedom and ensure that journalism remains a force for good in our society.”

As part of its global mandate, the IPI has been at the forefront of defending press freedom in countries where journalists face persecution. The institute’s support for Nigerian journalists underscores the interconnectedness of the global media community and the shared commitment to protecting the rights of journalists everywhere.
IPI’s advocacy efforts include:

Highlighting cases of press freedom violations.

Providing legal and financial support to journalists in distress.

Engaging with governments and international organizations to promote policies that safeguard media independence.
The election of the new IPI Nigeria executives marks a significant step towards strengthening the country’s media landscape. By promoting ethical journalism and addressing the challenges facing the industry, the organization aims to create an environment where the media can thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development.

As the new leadership begins its tenure, the Nigerian media industry stands at a pivotal moment. The actions and decisions of IPI Nigeria’s executives will not only shape the future of journalism in the country but also influence broader discussions about the role of the media in a rapidly changing world.

President Tinubu’s call for responsible journalism serves as a timely reminder of the media’s power to unite or divide, inform or mislead. It is a call that resonates beyond Nigeria, reflecting the universal importance of a free and responsible press in any democratic society.

The road ahead for IPI Nigeria is undoubtedly challenging, but the opportunities for positive change are equally significant. With a strong leadership team in place and the backing of both national and international stakeholders, the organization is well-positioned to champion the cause of press freedom and uphold the highest standards of journalism.

As Nigerians look to the media for information, accountability, and inspiration, the responsibility of IPI Nigeria’s new executives cannot be overstated. Their success will not only benefit the media industry but also contribute to the broader goal of building a more informed, united, and democratic Nigeria.
