Distinguished Barrister and environmentalist Chinonso Olivia Ihemeson recently hosted a thought-provoking talk on the theme “Environment and You" at the Nurturing the Nest event hosted by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Silver Spring Parish, Maryland, USA.

Ihemeson, a consultant with Angel & Stephens LLC, emphasized the importance of environmental sustainability, defining the environment as the totality of God's creation, including living and non-living things. Our choices and lifestyles significantly impact the environment, either positively or negatively, she told the attentive audience.

Ihemeson explained that environmental sustainability is crucial for maintaining a balance in the earth's natural environment and resources, ensuring that current and future generations can meet their needs.  She provided practical tips for sustainable living, including eating organic food, reducing waste, conserving energy, and avoiding single-use plastics.

Ihemeson who is also the author of "Environmental Laws and Sustainable Development in Niger Delta, Nigeria” shared alarming facts about plastics and offered ecofriendly alternatives.

Ihemeson's inspiring talk encouraged the audience to embrace environmental sustainability as a God-given responsibility, ensuring a better future for generations to come. The receptive audience was encouraged to avoid single use plastics which constitute a great hazard to the environment as they take decades to fully decompose when dumped in landfills. Harping further on the dangers of plastics, Ihemeson said they pollute rivers and end up in bellies of fishes that are eventually consumed by humans. Plastics items should be reused and alternatives like paper bags and metal straws should be embraced, said Ihemeson .
