The German government has channeled funds amounting to 16 Million Euros to help Malawi address challenges to do with provision of sexual and reproductive health service provision among other things.
The initiatives will be run under a programme called Nzatonse (an indigenous word that means ‘For all of us’).
This funding, was formalized through agreements between the Malawian government's Ministry of Health and Ministry of Finance, underscoring the commitment to advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in the country.
The programme is premised on enhancing informed demand for and accessibility to high-quality SRHR products, services, and information with emphasis on sustainable behavioral change and improved access for youth and rural populations.
Ute König, German Ambassador to Malawi said the latest support follows impressions they have noted from how the Southern African nation has been carrying out such activities.
‘’We pledge to continue supporting initiatives that contribute to the improvement of sexual and productive health services in the country,’’ he said.
According to Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, Minister of Health, the grant will play a crucial role in enhancing service delivery as it aims to ensure that the youth population receives sufficient and accurate information about sexual health awareness within communities.
The rights of women, adolescents and young people to access sexual and reproductive health services in Malawi are undermined by, humanitarian situations, stigma and discrimination, harmful gender norms and practices and lack of male engagement among others.
According to the UNFPA, many health facilities are not adequately equipped to provide comprehensive SRHR services and there is uneven distribution. Communication and transport systems remain inadequately developed.
In addition, supply of essential drugs and equipment is also a major challenge.
