President Kiir confirms Somalia Membership into East African Community

JUBA, 15 December 2023 (PPU)—- President Salva Kiir Mayardit who is also the Chairperson of the East African Community has confirmed Somalia’s admission into the bloc.

The event that took place in Kampala also saw Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud signed the instrument of accession and witnessed by Uganda’s President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

President Kiir stressed the importance of peace and stability in the region to achieve sustainable development.

For his part, the President of the Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said they will work together to develop the economic and commercial future of the East African countries to enhance trade in the region.

The signing of the instrument of accession for the Federal Republic of Somalia is a significant step towards strengthening regional cooperation.
