In the face of nearly two years of war and devastation, the students in the Tigray region of Ethiopia have managed to achieve remarkable success on their school leaving exams. Despite their schools being demolished and robbed, and the students themselves facing unimaginable challenges due to the conflict, an impressive 67 percent of students who sat for the examination in the Tigray Region scored passing grades.

This outstanding achievement has surprised many, especially when compared to other parts of Ethiopia where relative peace prevailed, only 3.3 percent of students managed to pass the exam. It is truly remarkable that in a region that was heavily affected by the conflict, such a high percentage of students were able to succeed academically.

According to state media reports, a staggering 69.96 percent of students who took the 12th-grade examination in the Tigray Region scored 50 percent or more passing grades. This result stands in stark contrast to the national average, where most students who took the national exam failed. Furthermore, a student from the Tigray Region achieved the highest grade possible, scoring an impressive 657 out of 700.

The news, disseminated by the Education Bureau of the Interim Administration of Tigray Region, has generated excitement and curiosity among the general public. People are eagerly awaiting further explanation from the Federal Ministry of Education to understand how such impressive results were achieved despite the challenging circumstances.

Kiros Giush (Dr.), the Head of the Education Bureau of Tigray Region, took to his social media account to share the remarkable achievements of the students. He revealed that 66.96 percent of the students who took the exam scored grades that would qualify them for entrance into university.

The determination and resilience displayed by the students in the Tigray Region are truly inspiring. Despite facing tremendous hardships, they have demonstrated their commitment to their education and their ability to overcome adversity. This achievement is a testament to their strength and the resilience of the human spirit.

The region has been plagued by conflict since November 2020 when tensions escalated between the regional government and the Ethiopian federal government. The hostilities have resulted in widespread destruction and displacement, leaving many schools in ruins and disrupting the education system. Access to education has been severely limited, with students often having to flee their homes or live in temporary shelters, making it even more remarkable that so many were able to succeed academically.

The achievement of these students highlights the importance of education and its transformative power. Despite the challenges they faced, these students persevered and showed that they could rise above adversity. Education provides a pathway out of poverty and instability, and the determination of these students serves as an inspiration for others facing similar circumstances.
