BUEA, June 12, 2023 – In an attempt to curb the global incidence of violent conflicts and insecurity considered one of the most urgent development problems in the world today, the Nkaku Policy Institute of the Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation will on June 21, 2023, organize the Nkafu Africa Peace and Security Forum through its Peace & Security Division.

This initiative which will take place at Djeuga Palace, in Cameroon’s political capital Yaounde is on the theme "Women and youth can play a great role to mitigate contemporary threats to security in Africa from an inclusive and human-centred perspective: how can we appraise this statement?"

"Invitation letters have been sent to key participants (that is; peace and security experts, policymakers, academics, researchers, international organizations, embassies CSOs) and most of them have already confirmed their participation;18 out of 19 panelists have already confirmed their participation,” Tazoacha Francis, Director of the Peace and Security Division of the Nkafu Policy Institute told Pan African Visions.

“The Run-Of-Show has been produced as well as the program; Service providers have been contacted for logistics. The event committee hold weekly strategic meetings to plan for the event. All gadgets for the event are being produced (that is; flyers, rollups, backdrops, notebooks, badges).”

The insufficient participation of women in formal conflict prevention and at the peace table is an important area of United Nations Security Council resolution 1325 (2000) that remains poorly implemented. The significant contribution and strong role of women in local mediation and conflict prevention initiatives continue to be largely unrecognized and weakly supported.

This initiative is on the theme Women and youth can play a great role to mitigate contemporary threats to security in Africa from an inclusive perspective

This situation which has been exacerbated by the financial crisis, pandemics and natural disasters will convene security experts, policymakers, academics, researchers, international organizations, and regional bodies including the UN, the AU and the RECs as well as members of civil society, to brainstorm on strategies to advocate and promote the investment in human security and strategic peacebuilding for sustainable peace and development in Africa.

The event will be hybrid and articulated on thematic areas including a high-level panel discussion, three break-out sessions and a public debate with a focus on specific topics that aim at producing actionable evidence-based policy recommendations that can be used by bodies when adopting definitive innovative policy in guaranteeing peace and security in Africa. It will be animated by hand-picked experts who have proven their worth within and without Africa.

It is expected that the forum will produce actionable evidence-based policy recommendations that can be used by the Regional Economic Communities and the African Union’s APSA and/or other bodies when adopting a definitive innovative policy in guaranteeing peace and security in Africa,” Tazoacha Francis, Director of the Peace and Security Division of the Nkafu Policy Institute added.
