Mozambique: Reopening Of Namoto Border Dependent On Tanzania

June 19, 2023

By Jorge Joaquim

The reopening of the border between Mozambique and Tanzania through the Namoto crossing point in Palma district, Cabo Delgado province, is now dependent on the Tanzanian authorities, according to police chief Bernardino Rafael, who said that the Mozambican side is ready for the opening.

The border post with Tanzania was closed approximately five years ago because of terrorist attacks.

Police, migration and customs officers have already been deployed in Mozambique and it is now up to the two governments to resolve the issue politically and diplomatically, he stressed.

Namoto was used by hundreds of people fleeing the March and April 2021 attacks on Palma, the natural gas projects hub about 40 kilometres to the south, who crossed the Rovuma River into Tanzania in search of safety.
