In an effort to bolster domestic resource mobilization and support the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA), has  launched  a comprehensive Taxpayer Education Campaign and  Awareness initiative.

The initiative, aimed at enhancing media understanding and coverage of tax-related issues, is a pivotal step towards achieving Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).

According to UNDP, the primary objective of the campaign is to foster a well-informed public by enhancing the media's role in disseminating accurate and comprehensive information about tax laws and compliance.

They add that by educating editors and journalists, the campaign seeks to improve public understanding of tax obligations, reduce tax evasion and ultimately increase government revenue necessary for funding essential public services and infrastructure projects.

The campaign kicked off with two major events which include the Editors' Forum, held on May 28, 2024 in Bulawayo.

The forum gathered editors from Bulawayo and surrounding regions such as Gwanda and Gweru.

Also a Tax and Customs Education for Journalists is expected to take place from June 10 to12, 2024, in Masvingo.

UNDP said that the event is expected to feature workshops and training sessions aimed at educating journalists on the intricacies of tax and customs regulations.

Participants are also expected to tour the Beitbridge Border Post to gain practical insights into customs operations in the country.

The UN agency says that the initiative is expected to equip editors and journalists with comprehensive knowledge and skills to report accurately on tax and customs issues, enhance media coverage of tax matters and  improving public understanding and compliance, fostering a collaborative relationship between ZIMRA and the media, ensuring consistent and accurate information dissemination including encouraging a culture of voluntary tax compliance among the public and reducing reliance on enforcement measures.

UNDP says that the Taxpayer Education Campaign aligns with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 and the SDGs, particularly Goal 16, which emphasizes peace, justice, and strong institutions.

They add that by improving tax compliance, the campaign supports the creation of a transparent and accountable tax system, essential for sustainable economic growth and development.
