Kenya’s Gen Z is rallying their compatriots to join in large numbers to protest against the controversial Finance Bill 2024.

Sponsored by the government, the bill aims to increase taxes, which has particularly angered young Kenyans who feel the economic strain acutely.

Critics across the country have criticized President William Ruto for pushing the bill forward, arguing that he is ignoring the already high cost of living. Many believe the bill will only exacerbate economic hardships.

Young activists assert that the bill is influenced by external pressures from the IMF and World Bank, accusing President Ruto of acting as their puppet.

The Finance Bill passed its first reading in Parliament last week, with a significant majority of 204 MPs voting in favour and 115 against. This development came despite widespread opposition and protests.

In the days leading up to the vote, several parts of the country, particularly Nairobi, were engulfed in anti-bill demonstrations. Protesters barricaded significant roads, causing extensive traffic disruptions and halting transportation for most of the day. Clashes with police were common, resulting in injuries to both officers and demonstrators.

Determined to force the government to abandon the bill, the youth have planned a massive demonstration for tomorrow. The call to action has resonated widely, with organizers expecting a significant turnout.

"We call on everyone to come out and join the nationwide strike," urged Gen Z.

The planned protests aim to send a strong message to the government about the public's rejection of the Finance Bill and its potential impact on their livelihoods.

The upcoming demonstration is expected to be one of the largest, with various civil society groups, unions, and community organizations joining forces with Gen Z.

The protests are not just about the bill but also a broader cry for economic justice and government accountability.
