Coronavirus: TUC calls for leave for workers to care for their children at home

March 17, 2020

The Trades Union Congress (Ghana) has urged all employers to grant leave to workers who may need to be home to care for their children following the suspension of schools across the country in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.

They have also asked all unions to work closely with their
employers to put in place the necessary measures or arrangements to ensure that
workers are fully protected from the coronavirus at their respective places of
work.

TUC calls for workers to work from home

In a statement signed by its Secretary General of TUC, Dr
Yaw Baah, the TUC also appealed to employers to allow workers who could work
from home to do so as a means of minimizing the spread of the covid-19.

The statement further said that it supports all the measures being rolled-up by Government to protect the citizens and anybody living in the country currently from the coronavirus disease outbreak.

“We appreciate the effort Government is making to protect
all Ghanaians and foreign residents in the country. We would like to draw
Government’s attention to the prisons because we all know that our prisons are
overcrowded,” it said.

Again, TUC advised workers to rely only on official sources
for information on the coronavirus disease.

Covid-19 in Ghana

Ghana has so far recorded six cases of the coronavirus pandemic.

And due to this, the government has placed a ban on all
public gatherings, including church services, political rallies, conferences,
workshops, funerals, festivals, sporting and religious events.

Other businesses such as nightclubs and drinking spot have
been asked to continue to operate, but observe enhanced hygiene procedures.

Prior to this directive, a temporal travel ban, from
countries that have recorded over 200 cases of the deadly disease, was also issued.
