The World Bank has initiated a five-day Implementation Support Mission for Malawi’s $150 million (260.1 billion Malawian Kwacha) Digital Malawi Acceleration Project (DMAP).
This mission aims to review the progress of implementation, tackle emerging challenges, and establish priorities for the next phase of the nation’s digital transformation initiative.
Commencing in Blantyre, the mission is led by World Bank Task Team Leaders Tim Kelly and Paul Ndungutse.
The mission began with a courtesy visit to the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Public Private Partnership Commission (PPPC), Arthur Nanthuru.
This marks the first formal interaction between the World Bank mission team and Nanthuru since he took office in April 2026.
During the meeting, discussions included the progress of DMAP, institutional coordination, the workplan and budget for 2026/27, procurement, financial management, and the execution of key project activities.
The PPPC serves as the implementing agency for DMAP, collaborating with the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology and other governmental bodies to advance Malawi’s digital transformation agenda.
Additionally, the World Bank mission plans to engage with the DMAP Project Implementation Unit (PIU) to conduct a thorough assessment of progress and implementation challenges.
A Consultative Meeting on Digital Malawi Connectivity Initiatives – Rural Broadband is also included in the agenda, where discussions will likely center on the Universal Service Fund (USF) Cell Tower Initiative, Public Institution Connectivity, and the School Connectivity Initiative.
The mission will also consult various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) that are beneficiaries and key stakeholders in the DMAP implementation.
The Implementation Support Mission is anticipated to offer a platform for the Government of Malawi and the World Bank to evaluate accomplishments, pinpoint and resolve implementation hurdles, and enhance coordination to ensure the success of the Digital Malawi Acceleration Project.
