BUEA, PAV – Nigeria’s football leadership has been thrown into turmoil after the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, the general secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, and the federation’s entire executive committee resigned weeks before scheduled elections.
The NFF confirmed the departures on Thursday, August 27, 2026, saying they followed growing public dissatisfaction with the recent performances of the country’s national teams. Ibrahim Gusau said his decision to resign was intended to create room for wider reforms within Nigerian football.
The leadership crisis follows the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The Super Falcons’ absence from the tournament will be particularly significant as Nigeria’s women had qualified for every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the competition began in 1991.
Ibrahim Gusau had been president of the NFF since September 2022 and was only 34 days away from completing his four-year term when he stepped down. The resignations, however, come against a backdrop of concerns extending beyond the performance of the national teams.
Nigerian media have reported scrutiny over the management of a ₦17bn federal intervention fund released in 2024 to address financial obligations involving the national teams. The NFF has also faced questions over governance and the management of Nigerian football, adding pressure on its leadership as on-pitch results have deteriorated.
The mass resignations now create uncertainty about the federation’s immediate future. An elective congress is scheduled for 27 September in Lafia, meaning the leadership upheaval comes only weeks before delegates are due to choose a new administration.
It remains to be seen how the federation will manage the transition and whether the planned election will proceed according to the existing timetable. Gusau’s resignation represents one of the most significant leadership changes in Nigerian football in recent years.
But replacing the officials at the top will not, on its own, resolve the deeper questions confronting the federation. The new leadership will face pressure to restore confidence in the NFF, address concerns over financial accountability and governance, and rebuild the national teams after a series of high-profile qualification failures.
