The Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) has taken a significant step toward strengthening climate journalism with the validation of a Draft Climate Change Reporting Manual, a resource designed to equip journalists with the knowledge and practical skills needed to report accurately on one of the defining challenges of the 21st century.

The validation workshop, held on July 30, brought together media professionals, climate scientists and key stakeholders in Zimbabwe’s national climate programme to review the draft manual before its final adoption. The initiative, spearheaded by the Zimbabwe Media Commission under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Academy Chinamhora, underscores the Commission’s growing commitment to building a media sector capable of informing communities about climate change, resilience and sustainable development.

The workshop reflected a growing recognition that quality climate reporting is essential in helping citizens understand the causes, impacts and solutions to climate change, while supporting informed decision-making at both community and national levels.

Addressing participants, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Nick Mangwana said climate change had evolved beyond being solely an environmental issue to become one of the country’s most pressing development challenges.

“Climate change is no longer an environmental concern. It has become one of the development challenges of our time. It has far-reaching implications for agriculture, food security, water resources, public health, infrastructure, biodiversity, energy security and people’s livelihoods,” Mangwana said.

He described the validation of the Climate Change Reporting Manual as a timely intervention that would strengthen Zimbabwe’s capacity to respond to climate-related challenges while supporting national development priorities.

“The validation of the Draft Climate Change Reporting Manual gives the nation hope and practical responses that support sustainable development and national resilience so that we can fight the forces of climate change, overcome climate shocks and strengthen our country’s resilience,” he said.

Mangwana noted that the manual is intended to become a comprehensive reference tool for journalists, media practitioners, climate scientists, environmental experts and journalism students.

“The Climate Reporting Manual is a valuable resource for journalists, media practitioners, climate scientists, experts in the field and journalism students. It enhances environmental reporting, strengthens public understanding of climate change issues and promotes sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, ecosystem restoration and disaster preparedness.”

Zimbabwe remains committed to fulfilling its obligations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement, with the Government continuing to implement policies and programmes aimed at building resilience to climate impacts.

Mangwana, however, emphasized that sound policies alone are not enough without effective public communication.

He said the manual would help bridge the gap between scientific research and public understanding by providing journalists with the tools needed to translate complex climate science into accessible, accurate and impactful reporting.

“The final manual will become an important resource that strengthens environmental journalism. It provides greater knowledge on climate science, adaptation and mitigation, investigative journalism and ethical reporting. It bridges the gap between science and journalism while equipping media professionals with practical skills to explain complex climate issues.”

He further stressed the importance of ethical and responsible journalism in promoting transparency and public accountability on climate action.

“It is important that journalists continue to practise responsible journalism guided by professional ethics. The media also plays a critical role in promoting public accountability. As a nation, we need progressive policies and strategic investments that support sustainable development and the attainment of Vision 2030.”

Mangwana concluded by reaffirming Government’s commitment to implementing the National Climate Policy, the National Adaptation Plan and other climate-responsive programmes aimed at reducing vulnerability and strengthening resilience across sectors.

The Zimbabwe Media Commission also reaffirmed its commitment to expanding climate awareness through nationwide programmes focused on public education, advocacy and sensitisation. By strengthening the capacity of journalists to report accurately and responsibly on climate issues, the Commission hopes to ensure that communities across Zimbabwe have access to credible information that supports informed action against one of the country’s most pressing development challenges.

The validation of the Draft Climate Change Reporting Manual represents an important milestone in Zimbabwe’s efforts to build a more informed, climate-aware society. Once finalized, the manual is expected to become a key reference for newsrooms and journalism training institutions, helping elevate the quality of environmental reporting while contributing to national resilience and sustainable development.
