The Democratic Republic of Congo’s efforts to strengthen food security and unlock the immense potential of its agricultural sector have received a major boost following a strategic partnership between Kasai Corporation SARL and the Global Flagship Initiative for Food Security, a collaboration designed to mobilize investment, strengthen food production and build long-term agricultural resilience across the country.
The partnership combines the Global Flagship Initiative’s international platform with more than four decades of agricultural leadership and local expertise built by Kasai Corporation under the stewardship of Director General Remy Kamana Kankola. Rather than focusing on temporary interventions, the initiative seeks to create sustainable agricultural systems capable of improving food security while generating jobs, attracting investment and stimulating inclusive economic growth.
Despite possessing an estimated 80 million hectares of arable land, abundant freshwater resources and one of Africa’s most favorable climates for farming, the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to face significant food security challenges. Years of conflict, underinvestment, weak infrastructure and supply chain constraints have limited agricultural productivity, leaving millions vulnerable to hunger despite the country’s enormous natural advantages.
The new partnership seeks to change that trajectory by positioning agriculture as a driver of national development rather than simply a humanitarian concern. Central to the initiative is a collaborative model bringing together government institutions, development partners, research organizations, universities, investors, philanthropic organizations and the country’s millions of smallholder farmers.
For Kankola, the initiative represents far more than another development partnership.
“True sustainability is born from collaboration. Our partnership with the Global Flagship Initiative for Food Security is not about short-term studies; it is about mobilizing serious capital and deploying real-world solutions on the ground in the DRC,” he said.
He stressed that meaningful transformation will require broad participation across both domestic and international institutions.
“By combining the Global Flagship Initiative’s robust global framework with Kasai Corporation’s deep local roots, we are building a powerful coalition. From American family offices and multilateral organizations like the UN, to our invaluable local smallholders and the Ministry of Agriculture, we are united in one goal: boosting local production, optimizing supply chains and ensuring every community has reliable access to nutritious food. Let’s get to work.”
Those priorities lie at the heart of the partnership’s implementation strategy. The initiative will focus on increasing local food production, improving agricultural logistics, reducing post-harvest losses and strengthening supply chains to ensure food reaches communities more efficiently. Better coordination between producers, processors, distributors and investors is also expected to improve market access while creating new economic opportunities throughout the agricultural value chain.
Beyond improving food availability, the collaboration aims to attract substantial private and institutional investment into one of Africa’s most undercapitalized agricultural markets. By leveraging international financing alongside local expertise, the partners hope to accelerate agricultural modernization while building resilient food systems capable of withstanding climate shocks, market disruptions and population growth.
The agreement also reflects growing recognition that achieving Africa’s food security objectives will require stronger public-private partnerships capable of mobilizing both capital and technical expertise. As governments across the continent pursue the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, investment-led agricultural transformation is increasingly viewed as essential to reducing poverty, creating employment and lowering dependence on food imports.
For Kasai Corporation, the partnership represents another milestone in its long-term commitment to agricultural development in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Drawing on more than 40 years of experience, the company aims to help position the country’s vast agricultural potential as a cornerstone of sustainable economic growth while improving livelihoods for farming communities across the country.
