President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi has announced plans to convene an inclusive national dialogue aimed at strengthening national cohesion, promoting peace, and reinforcing respect for the Democratic Republic of Congo’s constitutional order.
The announcement came on Friday following a meeting with representatives of the country’s major religious denominations at the African Union headquarters. The initiative is expected to bring together key national stakeholders in what President Tshisekedi described as a serene, inclusive and resolutely republican dialogue designed to consolidate unity while upholding the country’s institutions and Constitution.
The proposed dialogue comes at a pivotal moment for the DRC as the country continues to navigate security challenges in its eastern provinces, political reforms and efforts to consolidate national stability following recent regional peace initiatives.
Welcoming the announcement, Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo, speaking on behalf of the religious delegation, praised the President’s decision and described it as an important step toward lasting peace and reconciliation.
“We welcome this announcement and express our gratitude to the Head of State,” Cardinal Ambongo said.
He noted that the dialogue reflects President Tshisekedi’s continued efforts to promote peace, strengthen national cohesion and preserve the unity of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The audience brought together leaders from the country’s principal religious communities, underscoring the influential role that faith institutions continue to play in national reconciliation and peacebuilding.
Among those present were Mgr André Bokundoa of the Church of Christ in Congo (ECC), Archbishop Ejiba Yamampia of the Congo Awakening Church (ERC), Sheikh Abdallah Mangala representing the Muslim Community, Mgr Donatien Nshole, spokesperson for the Catholic Church, and Pastor Éric Senga, spokesperson for the ECC.
Religious organizations have historically served as trusted mediators during periods of political transition in the DRC and have repeatedly called for dialogue as a means of resolving national challenges peacefully.
The planned consultations are expected to provide a platform for broad national participation while reinforcing confidence in constitutional governance and democratic institutions.
The announcement also signals President Tshisekedi’s intention to pursue consensus-building as the country works to consolidate internal unity alongside ongoing regional efforts to restore peace and security.
