BUEA, PAV – Sixteen years after the idea was first conceived, the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has ushered in a new chapter in its history with the inauguration of its modern five-storey headquarters in Yaounde, an ambitious project that reflects both continuity and renewed dynamism in the governance of football in the country.
The project, originally envisioned in 2010 by former FECAFOOT president Iya Mohammed, has now come to fruition under the leadership of current president Samuel Eto’o. For many, the completion of the imposing structure is not merely the delivery of an infrastructure project, but the fulfilment of a long-standing dream to provide a befitting administrative hub for one of Africa’s most storied football nations.
The official inauguration ceremony, held in the nation’s capital on Wednesday, May 13, drew a distinguished gathering of political authorities, football administrators, and legendary figures from across the continent. Presiding over the event was the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Joseph Dion Ngute, representing the President of the Republic. In his address, he lauded the completion of the headquarters as a testament to the State’s steadfast commitment to promoting and developing football, describing the edifice as a symbol of national pride and institutional progress.

Adding continental significance to the occasion was the presence of the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, who arrived in Cameroon earlier in the day. In his remarks, Dr Motsepe emphasised the unifying power of football, noting that the infrastructure of this nature not only strengthens administrative capacity but also fosters greater cohesion within the football family. He commended Cameroon’s efforts to elevate the standards of football governance and infrastructure across the continent.
Built on a 500-square-meter site, the new FECAFOOT headquarters stands as a modern architectural landmark, designed to meet the demands of contemporary football administration. The structure embodies a spirit of collaboration, particularly between the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education and FECAFOOT.
In his speech, FECAFOOT President Samuel Eto’o paid glowing tribute to the Minister’s unwavering support, declaring: “Your Excellency, Mr Minister of Sports, dear Sawa elder, we did it. The children who came from the water did it. We did it together. History will remember that a father and a son from Douala accomplished this. One day, we will leave, no matter what may or may not have happened, but we did it, Excellency.”

The ceremony also served as a moment of reunion and celebration for the football community. Former Cameroonian internationals were present in significant numbers, joined by African football greats such as Jay-Jay Okocha and other prominent personalities who travelled from far and near to witness what many described as a historic milestone. Their presence added both prestige and emotional resonance to the occasion, bridging generations of football excellence.
For stakeholders, the completion of the FECAFOOT headquarters comes at a critical time, as Cameroon continues to position itself as a leader in African football both on and off the pitch. The facility is expected to enhance administrative efficiency, improve coordination, and provide a conducive environment for strategic planning and development.
With this landmark achievement, FECAFOOT not only honours a vision conceived over a decade ago but also lays a solid foundation for the future of the game in Cameroon and beyond.
