BUEA, PAV – The University of Buea is positioning itself at the forefront of scientific research and innovation following the signing of a landmark partnership agreement with leading Chinese research institutions.
A seven-member delegation from China CDC and the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, visited the University of Buea on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, to formalise a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening research capacity and fostering international collaboration.
The partnership, which will be hosted by the Faculty of Health Sciences, is expected to open new avenues for joint research, training, and knowledge exchange in critical areas of public health and microbiology.
The collaboration was spearheaded by Dr Kouam Fondjo Arnaud, a lecturer in the Faculty of Health Sciences, whose recent research stay at IMCAS laid the groundwork for the agreement. During his time in China, Dr Kouam received advanced training and mentorship, experiences that helped shape the vision for a sustained partnership between both institutions.
Strengthening Global Academic Ties
Ngomo Horace Manga, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Buea, expressed appreciation to the visiting delegation, led by renowned scientist George Fu Gao, former Director of China CDC and Head of the Delegation, for their commitment to support education and research in Cameroon.
Professor Ngomo Manga reaffirmed the institution’s ambition to lead in research and innovation, describing the University of Buea as a top academic institution in Cameroon. He assured the Chinese partners that the objectives of the agreement would not only be achieved but sustained, emphasising the university’s commitment to excellence in research and training.
Following the signing ceremony, members of the Chinese delegation held interactive sessions with staff and students of the Faculty of Health Sciences. The exchanges featured presentations outlining the Faculty’s strategic vision for the partnership, with a focus on collaborative research, capacity building, and addressing emerging health challenges.

A Strategic Boost for Scientific Research
The Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, a globally recognised centre for microbiology research with over 60 years of excellence, brings significant expertise to the partnership.
Known for its work in microbial resources, pathogenic microbiology, immunology, and biotechnology, IMCAS is expected to play a key role in enhancing the University of Buea’s research output and global visibility.
The MoU is a major step forward for the University of Buea as it seeks to expand its international footprint and contribute to global scientific advancement. The partnership will not only strengthen research capacity but also support the creation, promotion, and dissemination of scientific knowledge.
