HARARE, Zimbabwe — Zimbabwe has taken a major leap in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) with the official launch of its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (2026–2030) at the new Parliament building in Mount Hampden on Friday, 13 March. The theme, “Harnessing AI for Inclusive Development,” reflects the country’s ambition to accelerate digital transformation, drive economic growth, and foster innovation.
Addressing a gathering of high-profile delegates from Zimbabwe’s ICT and telecommunications sectors, President Emmerson D. Mnangagwa emphasized the tangible benefits of ICT in improving connectivity and advancing a knowledge-driven economy.
“My dear countrymen and women, it is pleasing that under the Second Republic, the Government has been purposeful in building and facilitating digital infrastructure that forms a solid base to support our country’s development aspirations,” the President said.
He highlighted the progress Zimbabwe has made in expanding mobile service coverage, bringing development closer to ordinary citizens, and strengthening the nation’s digital ecosystem.
“Consecutive investments in the ICT and telecommunications sectors are bearing fruit, guaranteeing connectivity for a data- and knowledge-driven future. Internet penetration continues to grow, bringing information and communication tools closer to the majority of Zimbabweans,” President Mnangagwa added.
He further stressed the crucial role of young innovators, academics, and technical entrepreneurs in driving Zimbabwe’s AI ecosystem:
“Commendable internet penetration forms a vital pool of potential users and creators in the Artificial Intelligence value chain. All this is powered by the intelligence and talent of our youth, poised to make global impact.”
The National AI Strategy aims to leverage technical expertise for economic growth, positioning Zimbabwe as a hub for innovation in Africa. President Mnangagwa underscored the need for legislative frameworks to protect minors online and ensure safe, responsible digital engagement.
The historic event was attended by top government officials, ICT service providers, cabinet ministers, the United Nations country coordinator Mr. Edward Kallon, industry leaders, stakeholders, and media personnel.
