Malawi President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to advancing peace-building initiatives within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), emphasizing the need for collective action to ensure security and political stability across Southern Africa.
Speaking on Friday at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, President Mutharika made the remarks during a high-level meeting with members of the SADC Panel of Elders. The panel is chaired by former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, with former Malawian President Joyce Banda serving as Vice Chairperson.
Dr. Banda is currently leading a SADC mediation mission in Madagascar following the country’s political transition in September 2025, underscoring the bloc’s growing role in conflict resolution across the region.
As Chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, President Mutharika called on the Panel of Elders to deepen engagement with local communities, stressing that sustainable peace must be rooted in grassroots participation.
He reiterated Malawi’s unwavering commitment to regional peace efforts, warning that instability in one country can quickly spill over into neighboring states, threatening broader regional development.
Dr. Kikwete described the engagement as “insightful and rich in guidance,” noting that the Panel of Elders drew valuable direction from President Mutharika on strengthening its mission going forward.
Meanwhile, Dr. Banda expressed gratitude for the trust placed in her to facilitate dialogue in Madagascar, highlighting the importance of inclusive mediation in navigating political transitions.
In a statement following the meeting, President Mutharika underscored the strong progress being made by the Panel of Elders in promoting peace and stability across the SADC region. He emphasized that sustainable development remains unattainable in environments plagued by conflict.
The President further called for unity among member states, urging leaders to remain steadfast in their shared vision of regional growth, peace, and long-term stability. He also pledged Malawi’s full support for the continued work of the SADC Panel of Elders.
