Malawi’s President Arthur Peter Mutharika has returned to the country following a nearly two-week private trip to South Africa.
The President, accompanied by First Lady Gertrude Mutharika, arrived at Kamuzu International Airport where they were welcomed by Justin Saidi, Chief Secretary to the Government, Richard Luhanga, Inspector General of Police, along with other senior government officials.
The trip marks President Mutharika’s second extended stay outside the country since returning to office. His previous foreign travel was in January 2026.
Upon arrival, the President was also greeted by supporters and members of the Democratic Progressive Party, who gathered at the airport to welcome him back.
The President’s private visit to South Africa has drawn considerable attention among Malawians, with many expressing curiosity about the purpose and potential outcomes of the trip.
President Mutharika departed Malawi on March 1, 2026, at a time when public debate continues around the government’s performance and the country’s ongoing economic challenges.
