FONTEM, PAV – Behind every successful humanitarian initiative lies a quiet army of individuals whose dedication often goes unnoticed. In the hills of Lebialem Division in Cameroon’s South West Region, the Lebang Cultural Development Organisation (LECUDO–USA) annual free health campaign has become a beacon of hope for thousands seeking medical care.

Yet, beyond the operating rooms, consultation desks, and diagnostic units stands an extraordinary force powering the entire effort: volunteers driven by compassion and a deep sense of community responsibility.

For years, the health campaign organised by LECUDO-USA in collaboration with Mary Health of Africa Hospital and other partners has been celebrated for delivering free medical services to inhabitants who often struggle to access specialised healthcare. But the true strength of the initiative lies not only in its medical equipment or financial support. Its greatest asset is the human spirit of volunteerism that fuels every stage of the campaign.

From the laboratory units and triage stations to the dental clinics, consultation rooms and mental health units, volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that every patient who walks through the hospital doors receives dignified and professional care. Many of them travel from different parts of the country, leaving behind personal commitments and comfort to offer their expertise to communities in need.

For some, volunteering is a mission rooted in love for their homeland. One such volunteer is Mbunya Mark, a fifth-year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Douala, who sees the campaign as an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the development of his community. “I came for this campaign as a volunteer because I want to see a future in Lebialem, a future in my village and in my hometown,” he explained with passion.

The true strength of initiative lies not only in its medical equipment but the human spirit of volunteerism

To others experiencing this for the same time is really good.  “This is my first time taking part in such a health campaign, and it has really been educational, teaching me how to work under pressure calmly and effectively “, Amambo Desmond Ambeh, Imagery Volunteer at the health campaign said while adding that “I want to see development, especially in healthcare infrastructure and help my people gain access to quality medical services.”

For young professionals like Mark, the campaign provides not only a platform to serve but also a chance to reconnect with their roots and give back to the communities that shaped them.

Across the hospital corridors, similar stories unfold. Nurses carefully attend to patients, laboratory technicians analyse medical samples with precision, and dental experts offer treatments that many villagers would otherwise never afford. Volunteers at triage stations manage the growing crowds, ensuring that every patient is attended to with patience and care.

Their commitment is visible in the long hours they dedicate to the campaign, often working from early morning until late in the evening without expecting any financial reward.

Ben Fominka, Chief Executive Officer of LECUDO-USA, emphasised that the success of the health campaign is inseparable from the sacrifices of these volunteers. “Even when all our partners provide the necessary support, this campaign would never succeed without the services of our volunteers,” he noted.

“Their commitment, professionalism and selflessness are what make this initiative truly impactful. For that, we deeply appreciate every effort they put into making the campaign a success.”

Indeed, their presence transforms the campaign into a collective act of humanity, where professionals, students and community members unite under one shared purpose: improving lives.

In a region where access to healthcare can sometimes be limited by distance, cost and infrastructure challenges, the efforts of these volunteers provide relief not only to the sick but also to families burdened by medical uncertainties. Every consultation offered, every surgery performed, and every diagnosis made represents a step toward restoring hope for communities across Lebialem and beyond.

As the LECUDO-USA health campaign continues to expand its impact year after year, the most powerful medicine is compassion. The volunteers who dedicate their time, skills and energy remind the world that meaningful change often begins with individuals willing to serve without recognition.

Their quiet sacrifices convey a powerful message that the future of healthcare in communities like Lebialem will not only be built through institutions and funding, but also through the unwavering commitment of people who believe that every life deserves care, dignity, and hope.

In the hearts of those who have been healed, their legacy will endure not as mere volunteers but as the unsung heroes who turned service into a lifeline for an entire community.
