The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has announced the appointment of Mohamed Benson Bawoh as its new General Secretary, with Ishmail Saidu Kanu, Esq taking up the position of Deputy General Secretary, as the governing body moves to strengthen its administrative leadership.
The appointments, which take immediate effect, were approved at a meeting of the SLFA Executive Committee held in Freetown on 3rd February 2026. The Association said the decision forms part of a broader strategy to improve governance, efficiency and accountability within football administration across the country.
Strengthening football governance
In a statement, the SLFA Executive Committee said it had full confidence in the leadership qualities and professional experience of both appointees, describing their roles as central to the implementation of the Association’s strategic plans and football development agenda.
The General Secretary is the chief administrative officer of the SLFA, tasked with overseeing the day-to-day operations of the secretariat, implementing executive decisions and coordinating with regional football bodies, clubs and international partners. The Deputy General Secretary supports these functions, helping to ensure continuity, policy execution and institutional stability.
Expectations and challenges
The appointments come at a time when the SLFA faces growing expectations from football stakeholders for improved governance, stronger domestic competitions and more effective youth and grassroots development programmes.
Football administrators and supporters alike have repeatedly called for reforms aimed at transparency, professionalism and long-term planning, as the sport continues to play a significant social and cultural role in Sierra Leone.

Looking ahead
The SLFA said it believes the appointments of Mr. Bawoh and Mr. Kanu will help address these challenges and contribute to a more efficient and responsive football administration.
The Association concluded by wishing both officials success in their new roles, saying their leadership would be critical to the future growth, management and governance of football in Sierra Leone.
