President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has commended the enduring friendship and growing cooperation between Malawi and Luxembourg following a high-level meeting with Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.
President Mutharika expressed deep appreciation for Bettel’s visit, describing it as a clear demonstration of Luxembourg’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Malawi.
He reaffirmed Malawi’s resolve to deepen the partnership, particularly as the two countries prepare to sign a General Cooperation Agreement on Tuesday. The agreement is expected to expand collaboration across multiple sectors of mutual interest.
Addressing Malawi’s economic transformation agenda, the President underscored the government’s determination to shift the country from a predominantly importing and consuming economy to one anchored in production and export-led growth.
He noted that urgent challenges related to food security, fertilizer supply, foreign exchange availability, and fuel shortages are being actively addressed, while longer-term measures are underway to stabilize the economy, curb inflation, and reduce interest rates.
“I therefore invite you and Luxembourg investors to establish companies in Malawi, as the country offers a favourable environment for investment,” President Mutharika said.
He highlighted Malawi’s enduring peace, hardworking and skilled labour force, and investor-friendly policies as key advantages for business and industrial development.
President Mutharika also extended Malawi’s goodwill to Luxembourg as it seeks election to a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
In his remarks, Bettel—who also serves as Luxembourg’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, Development Cooperation, and Humanitarian Affairs—congratulated President Mutharika on his electoral victory, noting the strong mandate and public confidence he enjoys.
Bettel expressed Luxembourg’s readiness to work closely with Malawi in support of the President’s vision for national transformation and sustainable development.
