Former Minister of Agriculture Honourable Sam Kawale has been arrested in connection with an ongoing corruption investigation, his lawyer, George Jivason Kadzipatike, has confirmed.
Kawale is currently being detained at Kanengo Police Station following his arrest, which is understood to be linked to corruption allegations surrounding the Greenbelt Authority, where he is considered a key figure in the probe.
Sources indicate that the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), working alongside the Malawi Police Service, had earlier attempted to arrest Kawale at his residence. That operation, however, was reportedly aborted due to the absence of the required legal documentation.
A member of the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Kawale served as Minister of Agriculture from October 2022 until September 2025. During his tenure, he has been implicated in alleged irregularities related to fertilizer procurement as well as the Greenbelt Authority’s Cashgate scandal.
The arrest forms part of a wider anti-corruption drive in Malawi, which has already seen several senior public officials arrested and charged. The ACB has consistently maintained that no individual is above the law and has reiterated its commitment to pursuing accountability and justice, regardless of status or political affiliation.
