Several media outlets reported gunfire in Guinea’s capital, Conakry, on Tuesday, February 10, triggering panic and confusion across parts of the city.
According to Reuters, sustained gunshots were heard near the central prison in Conakry, alarming residents in surrounding neighbourhoods. The source of the gunfire and what triggered it were not immediately clear.
As of the time of reporting, there had been no official communication from local authorities.
A Reuters witness said several military pickup trucks carrying armed security forces, along with an armoured vehicle mounted with a machine gun, were deployed around the central administrative district.
Guinea, a major producer of bauxite and iron ore, held an election on December 28 in which President Mamady Doumbouya reportedly won by a landslide.
Doumbouya first came to power following a military coup in September 2021. Despite a wave of military takeovers in parts of West Africa in recent years, Guinea has remained relatively stable.
