Kenya’s outspoken atheist leader, Harrison Mumia, has found himself in hot water at the Milimani Law Courts, facing charges for spreading false information.
According to detectives, on December 30, 2025, Mumia, who heads the Atheist Society of Kenya, allegedly used a fake Facebook account under the name Robinson Kipruto Ngetich to deliberately publish misleading information aimed at state leaders. The charges stem from Section 22(1) of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act No. 5 of 2018.
In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) noted that Mumia acted “with intent to mislead the public by publishing false and misleading information against state leadership using a fictitious social media account.”
When he was arrested, law enforcement officers searched his home on Kangundo Road and seized several items, including two company stamps from Dovty Digital Technologies and the Atheists in Kenya Society, an HP EliteBook X360 laptop, a Redmi smartphone, and other electronic devices thought to be relevant to the case.
“The recovered exhibits are believed to have been used in the commission of the offence and will form part of the prosecution’s evidence,” the DCI added.
Mumia appeared in court facing four counts of false publication and pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The court set his bond at Ksh1 million (USD7752) with one contact person, or he could opt for a cash bail of Ksh500,000 (USD3876) with two contact persons. Additionally, he was instructed to deposit his passport with the court.
The case is set for mention on January 19, 2026.
