Bukoba, Tanzania | December 15, 2025 .The Kagera Region is set to become a major hub for innovation, higher education, and East African regional integration following the official launch of the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) Kagera Campus in Bukoba District.
On December 15, Tanzania’s Vice President, Hon. Ambassador Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi, laid the foundation stone for the new campus at Itahwa Village, describing the project as a strategic investment in youth empowerment, skills development, and cross-border economic growth.
The ceremony was attended by high-level national leaders, including former President Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, Minister of Education, Science and Technology Prof. Adolf Mkenda, and Kagera Regional Commissioner Fatma Mwassa, who hosted the event.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Nchimbi said the University of Dar es Salaam Kagera Campus will serve students from Tanzania and across the East African Community (EAC), positioning the region as a center for knowledge creation, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
“This campus is more than an academic institution. It is a gateway to empowerment and a springboard for innovation where young people from across East Africa will develop ideas that drive economic growth and competitiveness in the common market,” Dr. Nchimbi said.
Highlighting Kagera’s strategic location bordering Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi, the Vice President urged the University of Dar es Salaam to prioritize practical, market-driven curricula aligned with regional economic opportunities.
